World’s first caffeinated toothpaste released in the US
NEW YORK, USA: According to the American Dental Association, almost half of Americans do not brush their teeth twice a day. In order to motivate people to brush more regularly, a U.S. startup recently launched Power Toothpaste, the world's first toothpaste to contain caffeine, which promises to eliminate morning grogginess while cleaning teeth.
Power Toothpaste founder, Dan Meropol developed the toothpaste together with a friend. Meropol, who has an IT consulting and sales engineering background, came up with the idea after learning that many Americans have abysmal oral hygiene habits.
"I began thinking about how I could change this and spoke with my friend Ian, who had been thinking about how awful his mornings are. He immediately suggested a caffeinated toothpaste. After Ian formulated the first batch of Power Toothpaste and our friends and family told us how well it worked, I decided to look into manufacturing it on a larger scale. Many months of development later, we are now ready to launch," Meropol told Dental Tribune Online.
Not being a dental professional himself, the inventor spoke with a number of dentists during the development of the toothpaste. In addition, they collaborated with an experienced manufacturer in the U.S. for formulation and production.
Unlike coffee, which takes up to an hour to fully absorb through the stomach, Power Toothpaste begins working immediately by absorption through the gingiva, providing a quick boost of energy while brushing, according to the inventors. "It used to take me hours from waking up to buying my first cup of coffee at the café to feel like myself. I would feel terrible for an hour every morning," said Meropol. "When I brushed for the first time with Power Toothpaste, I realized I don't have to live like this anymore."
Power Toothpaste contains the same ingredients as other brands available on the market, including glycerin, sorbitol, silica, water, caffeine, xylitol, calcium carbonate, PEG-40 hydrogenated castor oil, flavor, titanium dioxide, xanthan gum, menthol, citric acid, sodium citrate, Magnasweet and sodium laurel sulfate. Therefore, it helps remove plaque and prevent tartar buildup, but, in contrast to coffee, Power Toothpaste does not stain teeth.
"At Power Toothpaste, we believe that oral care hasn't been exciting for decades and the products that big toothpaste companies are offering just aren't good enough. Our mission is to make oral care fun and exciting again and, above all else, to get people brushing," Meropol concluded.
Power Toothpaste is being launched through a crowdfunding campaign on indiegogo.com on January 19, 2016, which will allow the inventors to produce and sell the product nationally. Meropol also disclosed that they are working on offering international shipping as well.
