NEW YORK, U.S.: According to webinar host Prof. Tomas Linkevičius, the concept of “one abutment, one time” has been circulating in the dental world for decades. In a free Dental Tribune Study Club webinar on Monday, Oct. 14, Linkevičius will put his case forward as to why there is no strong evidence regarding the benefit of the abutment level approach.

According to Linkevičius, it has been suggested that the moving of restorative procedures to abutment level avoids additional abutment disconnections, thereby preventing disturbance of the periimplant seal and producing better bone levels. Linkevičius says that logic dictates that positive outcomes should be obvious already at the early stage of the treatment, as multiple disconnections of healing abutments are inevitable. However, as there are no clinical studies that directly compare this approach with implant level restorations as a control group, he believes that there is no strong evidence of the benefit of the abutment level approach and he will talk in more detail about this.

Linkevičius is a professor at the Centre of Clinical Odontology in the Institute of Dentistry at Vilnius University, Lithuania, and a visiting professor in the Department of Oral Health Sciences at Ghent University, Belgium. He is the author of many articles published in international peer-reviewed journals and focuses his research on soft tissue and the cementation of implant restorations. He received his dental degree from Kaunas Medical University, Lithuania, in 2000, and in 2004, he completed his postgraduate studies in prosthodontics at Vilnius University. In 2009, he finished his PhD dissertation at Riga Stradinš University, Latvia. Linkevičius also lectures internationally and is an active member of the European Association for Osseointegration and the Academy of Osseointegration. He runs a specialist prosthodontics and implant dentistry practice and a private dental research facility.

The 1-hour webinar, titled “1 abutment—1 time story. Truth or myth?,” will be broadcast live on Monday, Oct. 14, at 1 p.m. EST. Attendance is free of charge after easy registration on the website. Participants will be able to ask questions via a chat window and have the opportunity to earn a continuing education credit by completing a multiple-choice questionnaire on the topic.
