Meeting review: 2018 Greater New York Dental Meeting
NEW YORK, N.Y., USA: The 2018 Greater New York Dental Meeting was held Nov. 23 to 28 at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in Manhattan. With courses offered in the lecture halls and right on the exhibit hall floor, attendees had plenty of opportunities to increase their knowledge.
In today’s ever-expanding online world of endlessly scrolling “verified-user” reviews and near immediate delivery of virtually any product or service, many continue to predict the end of face-to-face conferences because of the inconveniences and time disruption.
But the predicted demise never seems to come for the world’s top gatherings, and the Greater New York Dental Meeting powerfully illustrates two key reasons why: The virtual world has yet to reproduce the tactile experience of actually holding a dental instrument or standing in front of a full-mouth scanning system while picturing it in your practice; and even more important, no number of reviews, articles or comment threads can replace the insight that comes from spontaneous encounters with colleagues and thought leaders in classrooms, social gathering, hallways and, of course — in the exhibit hall.
Some of the “live dentistry” highlights, offered in on the show floor, included: “State of the Art Indirect Restorative Dentistry – A ‘Live’ Patient Demonstration,” presented By Ron Kaminer and Lou Graham; “Minimally Invasive Guided Tooth Preparation with Immediate Prosthetic Delivery 2018 – A ‘Live’ Patient Demonstration,” presented by David Garber; and “Excellence in Restorative and Aesthetic Dentistry for the Comprehensive Dental Practice,” presented by Chiann Gibson.
Other live dentistry courses included “Cosmetic Dentistry 101: The 2018 Team Guide to Digital, CAD & Aligner Success,” presented by Payam Ataii, DMD, MBA, and Shannon Pace Brinker, CDA; and “Immediate Tooth Replacement in Full Function,” presented by Sargon Lazarof, DDS.
Some of the meeting’s other offerings included “Surgical Techniques for the General Dentist,” presented by Hillel D. Ephros, DMD, MD; and “How to Negotiate or Renegotiate the Terms and Rental Rates in Your Dental Office Lease,” presented by Jas Banga.
In addition, plenty of other seminars, hands-on workshops and scientific poster presentations were offered, not to mention all of the in-booth education being presented by many companies right in their booths.
In the Henry Schein booths, new product demonstrations featured 3Shape TRIOS MOVE, DEXIS Titanium, Planmeca PlanMill 30 S; TechCentral OmniCore and Dentrix G7 featuring Smart Image from Henry Schein One. Henry Schein representatives also were available to discuss the expanded portfolio of practice solutions from Henry Schein Business Solutions and Henry Schein Financial Solutions, including Henry Schein Dental Business Institute, the Henry Schein Practice Analysis tool, and the latest integration of CareCredit with practice management solutions, Dentrix and Easy Dental from Henry Schein One, which offers practitioners more financing options for patients. The company also hosted live events as part of its Classroom series, featuring tips and tools for a productive practice, esthetic solutions for pediatric dentistry, handpiece equipment repair and many more topics to help enhance practice success.
At the other end of the spectrum, through its Henry Schein Cares foundation, Henry Schein was involved in a dental student competition hosted by the Dr. Edward B. Shils Entrepreneurial Fund, the Hispanic Dental Association, with Dentsply Sirona, Colgate and the AEGIS Dental Network. Students from NYU, Columbia, University of Pennsylvania, Tufts and the University of Texas at Houston competed for start-up project funding. They pitched their ideas to a demanding dental industry judging panel that included Bruce Lieberthal, Henry Schein chief innovation officer; Olivier Schiller, Septodont CEO; Dr. Terri Dolan, Dentsply Sirona chief clinical officer; Dr. Matilde Hernandez, Colgate Oral Pharmaceuticals scientific affairs manager; and Angel Figueroa, I-LEAD Charter School chief executive officer.
Henry Schein also invited attendees to “mill” around at a block party. The event featured exclusive offers on blocks for your Dentsply Sirona CEREC and Planmeca PlanMill equipment. The selection of show-special-priced blocks — all from leading manufacturers — encompassed every material available: glass ceramics, resin nanoceramics, zirconia, and ceramic and resin composites. And there was even a dancing “Block Man” at the party — and a prize-wheel to spin.
In the Convergent Dental booth, you could work hands-on with the Solea all-tissue laser, and in the Global Surgical booth, you could test out what microdentistry feels like with one of the two microscopes on display — and learn how growing number of practitioners are linking microdentistry with laser dentistry.
Benco Dental had so many hands-on opportunities it held a press conference to cover them all. Among the oppotunities, you could: examine the stylish Herman Miller Compass line of cabinetry that’s immune to moisture and has soft handles that don’t injure hips or equipment that pass by too close; take a close look at the PRO-SYS VarioSonic powered toothbrush with five precision brush heads and five speeds that make it ideal for periodontal patients or who have other sensitivities; test out the vibration-free Carestream CS 3100 Milling System that’s quiet and compact enough to place almost anywhere in your practice; and definitely try out the latest-generation Solea all-tissue laser from Convergent, which is set up with a microscope in the booth so you can really see it at work.
In the Planmeca USA booth, you could operate one of the latest additions to the company’s CAD/CAM portfolio — the PlanMill 30 S, Planmeca’s newest chairside mill. It combines high-performance servo-motor technology with durable milling components to deliver precise results. The 100,000-rpm, four-axis spindle isn’t just amazing to watch, it’s ideal for single-visit restorations and everyday milling of inlays, onlays, crowns or bridges.
In the IQ Dental Supply booth, you could easily picture you practice upgraded with the company’s dental equipment and full-service office design offerings. Pretty much anything your practice needs, regardless of your specialization, is available.
Align Technology offerings were on display in the Invisalign iTero booth, where attendees could get an up-close examination of the Invisalign system, “the most advanced clear aligner system in the world,” according to the company. Also in the booth, you could try out the iTero intraoral scanners.
