CAMBRIDGE, Ontario, Canada: Septodont, a global pharmaceutical and medical device company specializing in dental pain management, has announced that its Canada-based pharma division, Novocol Pharma, will receive funding of over C$32 million from the Canadian government. The investment is part of a countrywide initiative to advance vaccines and therapeutics for COVID-19 on a national level.
CHARLOTTE, N.C., U.S.: Dentsply Sirona and the Pittsburgh-headquartered dental support organization (DSO) North American Dental Group (NADG) have agreed to extend a partnership related to digital imaging solutions. In a press release, Dr. Andrew Matta of NADG said that the new agreement will help the DSO to keep up to speed with the continuing evolution of dental care.
NASHVILLE, Tenn., U.S.: Orthodontics disruptor SmileDirectClub (SDC) reported small declines in revenue and clear aligner case numbers for the fourth quarter of last year. The company’s chairman and CEO, David Katzman, outlined SDC’s continued global expansion, however, and said that consumers and dentists had shown increased acceptance of its direct-to-consumer tooth straightening business model during the pandemic.

SAN JOSE, Calif., U.S.: Half a million cases of clear aligners sounds like a considerable number—and indeed it is. It appeared that Align Technology had shrugged off the impact of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic when the company revealed that Invisalign sales for the third quarter had nearly eclipsed the half-million mark. This was a substantial increase on the comparable pre-COVID-19 quarter last year. According to President and CEO Joseph M. Hogan, the increase was driven by pent-up demand for orthodontic care and by the availability of unused disposable income.
FOOTHILL RANCH, Calif., U.S.: Medical device company BIOLASE expects that its U.S. sales revenue for the third quarter of 2020 will be in line with that of the corresponding pre-COVID-19 period last year. The company’s sales fell sharply in the first half of this year, but its preliminary earnings announcement will bring a degree of optimism as a host of major dental companies prepare to release their third quarter earnings reports in the coming weeks.
CAMBRIDGE, Mass., U.S.: LightForce Orthodontics is a digital dentistry platform that provides orthodontists with fully customized 3D-printed tooth-moving tools. Its customizable 3D brackets are the first of their kind on the market, and they are designed to reduce patient visits and treatment duration. The company launched LightForce this year, after five years of research and development, and has now raised $14 million (€12 million) in funding for the further development and commercialization of the system.

Bergman described the SARS-CoV-2 crisis as “one of the most trying moments in modern history.” As the company announced its earnings for the second quarter, the monetary cost to Henry Schein was revealed as significant. Envista Holdings cut its operating costs by more than $100 million (€84 million) between April and June and still posted an operating loss of close to $108 million. Staggering drops in earnings are the current reality for Envista and its competitors, but the dental giant said that recovery in dental markets is picking up pace.
