When it comes to the aesthetic performance of restorations in the anterior region, a key aspect to consider is translucency—the ability of the material to let light pass through it without becoming transparent. As teeth are naturally quite translucent, it is often noticeable if a restoration is of a low-translucency material, as it will not blend in. In addition, if the material is of a different colour to the surrounding teeth, it will likely appear unnatural. Before universal adhesives were available, two major techniques were used: total-etching adhesives, which basically work with phosphoric acid etching on enamel and dentine; and self-etching adhesives, which can be used with or without the option of etching enamel selectively. Prior to the introduction of self-etching adhesives in the late 1990s, dentists used mostly total-etching techniques. While this procedure achieves strong enamel bonding, it can also be very technique-sensitive and involves several steps. As a consequence, dentists welcomed the development of simplified adhesives. In 2011, the new generation of universal adhesives was introduced, with the aim of replacing all previous generations.

Much of the success of Kuraray Noritake Dental’s adhesive has come off the back of our originally developed MDP monomer (10-Methacryloyloxydecyl dihydrogen phosphate). After applying for a patent for it in 1981, we started using this monomer’s excellent chemical adhesion properties, hydroxyapatite and metals in PANAVIA EX, our first adhesive resin cement, as well as in our CLEARFIL SE BOND adhesive. Through a process of extensive research and development, we have been able to combine our MDP monomer with hydrophilic amide monomers to create rapid bond technology. COLOGNE, Germany: With two new products in their portfolio, Kuraray Noritake Dental aims to revolutionise dental aesthetics. At the International Dental Show (IDS), the company introduced a new generation of their already market-approved Panavia cement as well as two different multi-layered zircon discs which are intended to imitate the natural colour gradient of untreated teeth, which reaches a completely new level of translucency.

TROISDORF, Germany: Kuraray Europe, manufacturer of dental products such as cements, adhesives and composites, has participated in a charity project initiated by relief organisation Mary’s Meals. The charity calls for volunteers to pack school bags for African children and thus enable them to attend school. A Kuraray employee suggested the company contribute to the project.
