KRIENS, Switzerland: With an estimated 743 million people affected, periodontitis is a major global health burden. The condition is usually initiated by bacterial biofilm resulting from poor oral hygiene and mediates the destruction of soft and hard periodontal tissue, and has been linked to systemic diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease. A healthy diet is a well-known factor in the prevention and management of periodontitis, but there is one group of completely organic chemicals that could play a larger role than previously assumed: polyphenols.
Dr Lenka Banasova runs her own dental centre, Pearl Dental, in the Slovakian capital of Bratislava, where she has a passionate staff of dentists, dental assistants and dental hygienists. In recent years, her focus has increasingly shifted from conservative dentistry and prosthodontics towards periodontics. Most importantly, however, she is one of the few dentists to touch on the largely neglected topic of oxidative stress. In this interview, she explains how natural antioxidants can improve periodontal therapy.

DUBLIN, Ireland: The negative impact of sugar-laden drinks on oral health is something dentists have known about for many years. However, that these drinks may also be a factor that leads to death is something new. In a large European-wide study, researchers have found that those who had a high consumption rate of soft drinks had a higher all-cause mortality rate than those who drank less than one glass per month.
A graduate of the specialisation programme in periodontics at the University of Zurich in Switzerland, Dr Alex Solderer mostly treats severe cases of periodontitis in his daily routine. In addition, he conducts research on periodontal and dental implant topics. In his latest research paper, Dr Solderer conducted a systematic review of the efficacy of chlorhexidine rinsing after periodontal or implant surgery.

Today, Swiss oral health company CURADEN is commemorating collaborator and friend Dr Jiří Sedelmayer, who passed away last week aged 73, having lived a life richly filled with research, teaching and family. A champion of prophylaxis, Sedelmayer founded the individually trained oral prophylaxis (iTOP) programme, teaching students and dental professionals correct oral care for disease prevention. His influence in dentistry cannot be overstated: together with his beloved wife, Lucie, Sedelmayer contributed to a world where dentists are teachers and patients stay healthy.
Although toothbrushing is the most decisive factor in preventing oral disease, only a few patients and dental professionals know how to brush perfectly. After earlier working as a dental technician and also as a dancer, Dr Fabio Angelini qualified as a dental hygienist and is now teaching internationally as an instructor in CURADEN’s iTOP programme. Individually trained oral prophylaxis (iTOP) is an interactive programme that teaches dental students and professionals perfect oral hygiene habits, so that they, in turn, can train their patients to achieve oral health that will last a lifetime.
